When talking about eco friendly paints this means it does not contain heavy metal or any VOCs or Volatile Organic Compounds. Most “green” or natural paints contain natural plant oils, waxes and dyes. The most common types of these paints are milk paint, lime wash and clay paint.
Milk paint contains casein which is common in milk products. This ingredient is separated from the milk then added with earth pigments, clay and water.
Similar to clay it is perfect for interiors and it comes in a matte finish. For the lime wash it is calcium based mineral mixed with water to produce a simple eco friendly paint.
This type of paint can be used indoors and outdoors which leaves a unique and glowing finish and it also comes in a variety of colors.
Because of the structure of the calcium crystals it can only be used with porous materials like concrete, brick and wood so surface already painted cannot take lime paint. The most common of all eco friendly paints is clay paint, which consists of earth based minerals with water.
This is perfect for homes that would desire a rustic look. It provides an adobe-like finish and comes in different colors. One can choose earth toned clay paints or in tints of orange, blue or white. It can adhere to most surfaces and will mostly require only two coats.
Generally paints without VOCs are water based so have them stored in indoors because it can be damaged by freezing temperatures.
Also position them upside them when storing but make sure lids or covers are tight to prevent air from entering the can. When deciding to combine water and oil based paints make sure to have two different sets of brushes.
